amd processor issues build 5270

AMD Processor Issues (Build 5270)

It seems there are some issues with Vista Build 5270 and AMD Athlon XP processors and/or driver. When I began the installation of Vista I noticed the mouse was stuttering and assumed it was an issue with the install process/keyboard mouse. I began to suspect that something might be wrong when it took almost three hours to install and at one point I thought the install had locked up and almost reset the machine. After I got the desktop up and running I discovered the mouse was still stuttering and Vista as a whole was running slow. I spent many hours researching on the web for a cause/solution when I discovered a post about Vista running slow and some issues with the mouse. The poster when on to state that he/she was running an AMD Athlon XP processor and had updated there processor driver to a previous one from Windows XP and it resolved there issues. He/she suspected that any AMD processor with a front side bus (FSB) of 266mhz or less would suffer the same issues. Since I was was running an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (266mhz FSB) I decided to give the suggestion a try. Installing the older driver did fix the mouse issues and it appears the speed is close to normal although I think it may still be a little "performance challenged". I'm not sure if the install of the older driver actually fixed the issue as much as it disabled the driver installed by default. I say this because the device manager now shows a Warning icon and states that this driver/device is not functioning properly. Despite this fact the Vista clearly performs better. (On a side, note can someone explain what this driver does for OS features/performance?)
I'm looking for feedback from other users running older AMD processors in order to prove/disprove this theory. It could be related to some other combo of hardware devices and just happend to dissapear when the processor driver was changed. If you have or haven't had an issues with Vista (Build 5270) and you are running an an Athlon XP erra processor please reply to this post with as much detail about your machine as possible. Thanks. I hope this information gets to the right people at MS and they can investigate and/if correct the issue with a new processor driver or at the very least post some information about the issue in the release notes so AMD owners will know its an issue. Like I said I spent a lot of time trying to find out what was causing the problems and couldn't find anything from MS related to this issue or if they even knew it was a problem. Anyway, I realize this is "beta stuff", I'm just trying to do my, little, part by testing and reporting potential issues. Overall from what I've seen thus far great job MS can't wait till offical release.

I am sad to say that I also experienced some of the same issues on my AMD Athlon XP (2200+) (266Mhz FSB)
I have 1GB RAM (Cas 2 333Mhz) Plextor DVD+/-RW Soyo KT 400 Ultra Platnium (motherbaord) 80GB 7200 RPM HD Nvidia GeForce Ti ... (AGP 4x 128MB)

This is the exact issue I have had, with both 5270 and 5112. I have reported this in both versions as bugs. Im running an 2100XP+ AMD Athlon processor with 1gig of Ram.

I have also had the problem with an Athlon XP 2800+ and 1 GIG of RAM using build 5112. After 6 attempts I finally just gave up. On the final attemp I got to the EULA window, accepted and tried to click next but I couldn't get the mouse pointer to move at all. After letting it set that way for 1.5 hrs. I just gave up.
I have a DLink NIC, a 20 Gig HD formatted with NTFS, a MSI motherboard and a Liteon DVD drive.
I tried to install Win 2K Pro after I gave up on Vista and it installed without a problem.

Using AMD Athlon XP 2800 on an AN7 Abit board. 1GB RAM. ATI x700 Pro. Dual Samsung Syncmasters. Onboard sound (nVida chip). Couple of hard drives (WD), a few burners (NEC and LiteOn). USB mouse, PS/2 keyboard. A bunch of USB stuff (scanner, graphics tablet, printer, external hard drive). I had to toss in an old Realtek NIC as my nVidia onboard controller isn't compatible (yet). DLink router (DI524) doing well with the wireless network. Still haven't got the graphics tablet working. Other than that tablet.... No problems installing or running. -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User

Hi, I'm running on an older Athlon MP system (Microstar K7D Master mobo, 2 processors, 1.2Ghz), with an NVidia GEForce 4 (128MB), 512MB of RAM, a WD 80GB hard drive (no great shakes, 80GB, ATA100), onboard AC97 audio. Vista Beta 1 gave me all kinds of fits with it (I assumed it wasn't ready for two processors), but 5270 loaded (took 2.5 hours to install!!) and runs fine, Seems quick, too.

Thanks everybody for listing your experiences with Vista and AMD Athlon processors. It seems some of us experienced issues with Vista while others did not so it must be some combination of processor and other hardware. Well the good news is I just got Vista 5308 (Feb CTP) running and it works great right out of the box or um...download. In addition to fixing the processor driver issues, it installed in an amazing 30-45 minutes as apposed to the 3+ hours with 5270 (Dec CTP). For those of you who had trouble with 5270 I encourage you to try 5308 you may be pleasantly surprised!
Great job Vista Team!
